The leading cause of death in the US for people between the ages of 1 and 44 is brain trauma. Almost 2 million brain injuries occur each year. Over 20% of these injuries cause permanent disability. More than 5 million people in the US are permanently disabled because of a brain injury.
Injuries involving trauma to the brain have a devastating effect on both the victims and their families. Sadly, most of the traumatic brain injury victims suffered their injury at the hands of another.
The Kenneth G. Marks Law Firm represents victims who have suffered from a traumatic brain injury due to someone else’s negligence. These accidents can happen from a car accident, motorcycle accident, slip and fall accident as well as any number of dangerous situations. Though brain injuries may present smaller significance when compared to other injuries, we know the devastation these injuries can cause the victims.
Brain injury can cause paralysis, impact motor functions, loss of the ability to think or reason, memory impacts, sensory impacts that include speech and hearing, and emotional disability that includes depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder.
Common brain injuries can be characterized as the following:
A concussion is a blow to the head that can cause amnesia, vertigo, nausea, and a significantly lower and weak pulse. There may also be visible bleeding and or bruising to the surrounding area. Once consciousness is regained, there may be lasting occurrences of headaches and blurred vision. If the concussion is severe, coma may result. These are usually sports related.
An anoxic brain injury occurs when the brain is deprived oxygen. These injuries usually happen due to swimming or diving accidents. Sometimes these occur due to a surgery.
A traumatic brain injury includes tearing of tissue or nerves, bruising of the brain from impacting the skull, and swelling. Vehicle accidents are usually the cause of these types of injuries.
